The Swiss hotel industry accommodated significantly more guests in November. It also looks like a record figure for the year as a whole.
In November, hotel overnight stays rose by 6.8% year-on-year to a total of 2.3 million, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Tuesday. There was a particularly strong increase of 12.5% to 1.1 million overnight stays among foreign guests. Domestic guests generated 1.2 million or 1.9 percent more overnight stays.
New record within reach
For the period from January to November, the number of overnight stays climbed sharply by 9.0% year-on-year to a total of 38.5 million. While foreign guests recorded a strong increase of 22.1 percent with 19.1 million overnight stays, domestic guests recorded a slight decline of 1.4 percent to 19.3 million overnight stays. Guests from Europe accounted for the lion's share with a good 11 million overnight stays, followed by Asia (3.8 million) and America (3.7 million).
Overall, however, the November figures bring the previous record from 2019 clearly within reach. In the last pre-corona year, a total of 39.6 million overnight stays were registered.
