A Swiss man was hit and fatally injured by a van in the center of Milan on Thursday. Another pedestrian was seriously injured in the accident. Two women suffered minor injuries.

As the Italian news agency Ansa reported on Friday, the 55-year-old van driver tested positive for alcohol. The value was slightly above the maximum permitted limit. According to initial investigations, however, a medical problem on the part of the van driver could have led to the accident.

The man had already been hospitalized for epilepsy in the past and therefore underwent medical tests in the last few hours.

Images captured by surveillance cameras in the area showed how the delivery van of a maintenance company, which was not traveling at high speed, suddenly swerved to the side and ended up on the sidewalk. The investigators therefore assume that it was an accident.

The van driver is now being investigated on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and violation of the Road Traffic Act.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) confirmed on Friday that a Swiss citizen had died following an accident in Italy. The Swiss Consulate General in Milan is in contact with the local authorities.

The FDFA is not aware whether the people injured in the accident were Swiss. According to Ansa, the seriously injured man is German.
