The solar program launched last spring by the Swiss Mountain Aid Foundation has got off to a successful start: The foundation co-financed around 280 solar projects by companies in the mountain region in 2023. This was also a challenge for the volunteer experts.

"Over the summer, I was twice as busy as usual," said Peter Pauli, the expert responsible for the two cantons of Appenzell, in a press release issued on Thursday. In other areas, too, the workload of the 38 experts who examine the incoming applications and visit the businesses on site increased significantly.

The Berghilfe staff made a special effort for the new solar program: the volunteers spent a total of 1800 working hours on it. They also spent a further 7600 hours assessing the other usual applications. In addition to the 280 solar projects, Berghilfe supported 550 other projects.

The solar program met with great interest right from the start, according to the press release. The first mountain farms submitted applications for photovoltaic systems as soon as the program was launched. So far, projects have mainly been realized on mountain farmhouses.

Swiss Mountain Aid, which is financed exclusively by donations, covers up to half of the investment costs for solar projects. It takes into account the financial situation of those wishing to build and the available subsidies from the public sector. The solar program, which was launched in spring 2023, is initially limited until the end of 2024.
