Last polls and forecasts before election day had predicted a slight shift to the right. However, the result of the SVP was much stronger than some pundits had predicted. The loss of the Greens was also underestimated in some cases. Polls for the National Council elections have been showing losses for the Greens and gains for the Swiss People's Party for some time. The Social Democrats and the Centre predicted gains, which have now been realized. The pollsters were divided on the extent of the shifts. The latest election barometer from the Sotomo research institute commissioned by SRG predicted a 2.5 percent point increase for the SVP. According to the Tamedia survey from early October, however, it was 3.1 percent points. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) saw an increase of 3.0 percentage points in the election. The Green Party's loss was higher in the SRG election barometer (3.5 percentage points) than in the Tamedia survey (2.7 percentage points). However, even this prediction was better than the actual result: the Greens lost 3.8 percentage points on Sunday. ©Keystone/SDA
