The Swiss National Science Foundation is getting a new director. Katrin Milzow and Thomas Werder Schläpfer will succeed Angelika Kalt, who is retiring, from April 1, 2025.

With this internal succession, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) is relying on experience and continuity, as the institution writes in a press release on Friday. Katrin Milzow and Thomas Werder Schläpfer are already members of the Steering Committee - she as Head of Research Development, he as Head of Research Promotion.

Milzow has built up the SNSF's Strategy division since 2008 and was involved in the national strategy for open research data and the reform of early career support. After studying in Oxford and Brussels, she completed her doctorate in European politics at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) in Geneva.

Thomas Werder Schläpfer headed the SNSF's Mathematics, Natural and Engineering Sciences Division from 2017 to 2020. During his nine years at ABB, he worked in applied research and later as Head of Development, leading teams at a global level. He holds a doctorate in computer science from ETH Zurich.
