The Swiss parahotel industry received fewer guests in the second quarter. A good two thirds of guests in vacation apartments, campsites and collective accommodation came from Switzerland.
The Swiss parahotel industry recorded a total of 3.4 million overnight stays from April to June, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Friday. This is 8.4 percent less than in the same period last year. A decline of 1.5 percent had already been recorded in the first quarter.
Swiss guests still in the majority
Swiss guests were responsible for 2.3 million overnight stays in the second quarter. Their share of total demand amounted to 68 percent. The ratio between domestic and foreign guests thus remained more or less stable.
In the collective accommodation sector, which includes youth hostels and SAC huts, for example, Swiss nationals were clearly in the majority. Almost one million of the 1.2 million overnight stays in this sector were attributable to guests from Switzerland.
Almost three quarters of the 1.2 million guests at campsites also came from Switzerland. In contrast, foreign guests accounted for just under half of overnight stays in vacation apartments.
Overall, the parahotel industry recorded around 8 million overnight stays in the first half of the year. This does not include July and August, which are by far the most important summer months for the sector. In order to exceed the previous year's result of 17.6 million overnight stays, the second half of the year would have to be significantly stronger.
