In Switzerland, the parties have spoken out in favor of the Federal Council's proposed ban on the radical Islamic group Hamas. The SVP felt that the draft law did not go far enough in the consultation process. The SP demanded clarifications, for example for parliament to have a say.
The parties were unanimous in the consultation that ended on Tuesday: they want to ban Hamas as a terrorist organization. This should prevent financing and propaganda measures in Switzerland.
In addition to Hamas, the ban would also affect front organizations and successor organizations. However, the SVP would also like to ban organizations that act identically to Hamas in general.
The SP called for parliament to have a say if the Federal Council bans Hamas-related organizations. It also demanded that diplomats and humanitarian aid workers be allowed to come into contact with Hamas people.
The discussion about a ban was triggered by a terrorist attack by Hamas in Israel on October 7. Over 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 hostages abducted.
