Swiss platform “usethenews” for news expertise launches

Switzerland now has an internet platform for dealing competently with news. It went online on Wednesday with the address usethenews.ch and aims to be a meeting place for anyone looking for practical experience, teaching materials, further training opportunities or expertise on news skills.
The platform is operated by an association made up of the Swiss Media Publishers Association (VSM), the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG) and the Keystone-SDA news agency. This was announced by the "UseTheNews" association on Wednesday. It is supported by the Mercator Foundation.
At its core is a database containing sixty educational offers, training courses, workshops and materials available in Switzerland in the field of news literacy and journalistic media education. In addition, "usethenews.ch" offers information from science and practice on journalism, media education and media research.
According to the press release, democracies depend on citizens being able to make informed political decisions based on facts. A key element of this is news literacy as the ability to critically evaluate news, check sources, understand the media and analyze information appropriately.
The platform is currently available in German and French, with an Italian version to follow later.
