Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) comments online on the election of Federal Councillor Beat Jans as follows:
"The fact that the new Federal Councillor is Beat Jans is no longer a surprise: the 59-year-old has leadership experience as a member of the cantonal government and, as a Basel native, represents a region that has not been represented in the national government for 50 years. From his time in the National Council, Jans is still well connected in Bern and is remembered as a competent politician. (...) For Jon Pult, on the other hand, the election ended in disappointment: the 39-year-old is regarded as a natural political talent and is very popular in the SP parliamentary group. However, many members of the middle classes were bothered by his Juso past. And in the hearings with the other parties, he did less well than Beat Jans. An important aspect of the choice of Alain Berset's successor is the large number of votes for Daniel Jositsch, the preferred candidate of the conservatives. Many conservative MPs did not follow the instructions of their party leaders and voted for Jositsch, even though the Zurich Councillor of States was not the official candidate of the SP. This breach of the rules of concordance is likely to lead to discussions among the parties."
