22.3 billion passenger kilometers were covered on the Swiss rail network in 2023. According to the Federal Statistical Office, this is the highest figure ever achieved. The number of passengers transported in 2023 was lower than in 2019.

2023 was the first year since 2019 without any restrictive pandemic measures, as the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) wrote when publishing the new figures for public transport in 2023 on Wednesday. In 2019, 21.7 billion passenger-kilometers were transported. One passenger-kilometre corresponds to the transport of one person over one kilometer.

A look at the statistics also showed that 614 million people traveled by rail in 2023. This is an increase compared to the years with pandemic-related measures in 2020 (405 million), 2021 (423 million) and 2022 (541 million). According to the FSO, this figure was 641 million people in 2019 and was therefore higher than in 2023.
