The Swiss Science Council has identified a lack of coordination in mission-oriented research in Switzerland, leading to inefficient use of resources and overlapping project funding. The Swiss research and innovation policy has traditionally been strongly focused on bottom-up processes, with scientific research largely determined by the researchers themselves and funding often provided through funds that give researchers a certain degree of autonomy and freedom in choosing their research topics. However, due to the climate change, the Covid-19 pandemic and increasing tensions in world politics, mission-oriented research, which is directed towards specific goals, has gained in importance. The Science Council has called for better coordination of mission-oriented research in order to ensure efficient use of resources and to ensure that research is directed towards the most pressing societal and political goals.
