In the two years since Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, Swiss Solidarity has financed 109 projects with 80 million Swiss francs. These focus on the repair of buildings and infrastructure, health care and individual help for those affected within Ukraine. Swiss Solidarity speaks of an "unparalleled wave of solidarity".
The foundation collected 135 million francs in donations for humanitarian aid in Ukraine, as it announced on Friday. This is the second-highest amount in the foundation's history. "However, we are dependent on further support to ensure our humanitarian aid in the long term," said Swiss Solidarity Director Miren Bengoa.
While aid was extended in the first few months to neighboring countries such as Moldova, Poland and Romania, where 36 projects were supported with CHF 6.8 million, it was later refocused on eastern Ukraine, which was directly affected by the fighting, and on areas to which many people had fled.
Direct aid in Ukraine
According to Swiss Solidarity, almost 90 percent of all donations were used directly in Ukraine and focused on people with special needs. These include children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, single parents with several children, older people and people with disabilities. Other projects focus on trauma management, child protection and demining in the country.
In its work, Swiss Solidarity relies on Swiss partner organizations and their local partners. "The indiscriminate attacks and the ongoing bombings" are a major risk for them, writes the foundation.
The organizations supported by Swiss Solidarity in Ukraine include Médecins Sans Frontières, Caritas Switzerland, Fondation Suisse de Déminage, Fondation Digger, Fondation Terre des hommes, HEKS, Helvetas, ICRC, Medair, Médecins du Monde, Save the Children, Swiss Red Cross, Solidar Suisse and the Hirondelle Foundation.
