The Swisscom-Weko glass fibre dispute is coming to a close. The competition authorities have now sent the telecom company the proposal of their decision. The company has until mid-September to respond. Although the Swisscom may request an extension, the Weko could make a definitive decision this year, depending on the company's amendments. The dispute has been ongoing since December 2020, when the Weko stopped the Swisscom's fibre optic expansion with precautionary measures. The Weko believes that the company's modified network architecture with only one connection from the telephone exchange to the street manhole is anti-competitive. The Weko insists on an expansion with one connection for each household, so that competitors can offer different internet services with higher surfing speeds than the Swisscom. In October 2020, the Swisscom made a U-turn in the glass fibre dispute with the Swiss Competition Commission (Weko) due to the pressure of hundreds of thousands of blocked connections that could not be put into operation. The company is now rebuilding direct connections from the telephone exchange to households. At the end of March 2023, around 500,000 fibre optic connections were blocked, representing 9% of all households. The Swisscom is now partially rebuilding these blocked connections. In total, 43% of Swiss households are connected to ultra-fast data lines. 100% would be 5.45 million connections.nnnn
