The website of the Swiss lottery company Swisslos reported problems immediately after Wednesday evening's draw. The reason for this was that a "very large number of players" wanted to check whether they had won at the same time.
However, the website overload is not related to the gaming system, which has already coped with much higher loads in the past, Swisslos informed the Keystone-SDA news agency on Thursday.
The cause of the problem with the winning number display is still being investigated, the statement continued. 40 percent of Swiss Lotto bets are received online. Just under half of these were via the app, which has around 110,000 users. Online participation in Swiss-Lotto has been possible via the Swisslos website since 2000.
Jackpot continues to grow
However, players who did not load the page on Wednesday could breathe a sigh of relief: the Swiss Lotto jackpot was not hit again. It now stands at 65 million francs. The next draw will take place next Saturday.
The biggest Swisslos jackpot ever won was a good seven years ago: 70 million francs were up for grabs in December 2016. However, three participants had to share the jackpot. They each received 23.4 million francs.
If just one person picks the six correct numbers and the lucky number on Saturday, it would be a record win in the 50-year history of Swiss Lotto. The biggest win to date by a single person was achieved in 2014: On August 23, a lucky player pocketed a sum of 48,598,075 francs and 75 centimes.
