Swissmedic has joined an initiative of the EU-Medicines Agency to increase international cooperation for the faster and more transparent approval of innovative medicines. This initiative has been extended to cover medicines for unmet needs, antibiotics and medicines to protect public health. The first medicine to be reviewed under this new cooperation is an mRNA vaccine against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). RSV is responsible for most cases of bronchitis in infants and young children and causes annual epidemics in the cold season, with more severe outbreaks occurring every two years in Switzerland. Moderna has submitted an application for the RSV vaccine to the EMA, Swissmedic and the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration. In addition to the Australian and Swiss authorities, the Brazilian, Canadian and Japanese medicines agencies and the World Health Organization have also joined the EMA initiative.nn
