Switzerland has added further individuals, companies and organizations to its sanctions list in connection with the Russian attack on Ukraine. And the Federal Council intends to address the twelfth package of sanctions adopted by the EU soon.

The Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) added 61 further individuals and 86 companies and organizations to the sanctions list, as it wrote on Friday. Their assets in Switzerland must be frozen and reported to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). Travel sanctions also apply to those affected.

Among the newly sanctioned are members of the Belarusian armed forces, leaders of military industrial companies and members of Russia's Central Election Commission. The newly listed companies and organizations are predominantly Russian arms companies.

On Monday, the EU adopted what is now the twelfth package of sanctions in connection with the attack on Ukraine. Among other things, this provides for gradual import bans on diamonds from Russia and originating in Russia. According to the EAER, imports of Russian diamonds into Switzerland have fallen massively since the start of the war. Direct imports of natural and synthetic diamonds from Russia are no longer taking place.

Tighten oil price cap

In addition to the diamond ban, the twelfth EU sanctions package provides for the price cap on Russian oil exports to third countries to be tightened. The price cap is actually intended to force Russia to sell oil to customers in other countries for a maximum of 60 US dollars per barrel in future.

The Federal Council was informed of these sanctions by EAER head Guy Parmelin on Friday. According to the statement, it will deal with a possible adoption of the package "in the near future". In principle, the Federal Council is complying with the EU sanctions, but is examining the individual measures, according to earlier statements.
