Switzerland and the Pacific island of Niue have established diplomatic relations. Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and his counterpart Mona Ainu'u signed a declaration of intent on Wednesday. The signing took place in the New Zealand capital of Wellington, as announced by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (EDA). There, the Swiss Federal Council also met with New Zealand's Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta. The ten-day mission of the Swiss Foreign Minister to Southeast Asia and Oceania is the last stop. The rapprochement with the small Pacific state of Niue, with its approximately 1700 inhabitants, is intended to strengthen Switzerland's influence in the geopolitically important region and its role in the UN Security Council. The declaration of intent is intended to promote cooperation between the two countries in areas such as trade, investment, tourism, culture, education and science. In addition, the two countries will exchange information on international issues and support each other in international organizations.nnnnnn
