Switzerland condemns Russia's decision to hold elections in the occupied territories of Ukraine. These "so-called elections" constitute a serious violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

These are the words of a short message from Ambassador Muriel Peneveyre, Head of the Eurasia Division at the State Secretariat of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, which was distributed on Friday via X (formerly Twitter). Switzerland does not recognize the annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russia.

Russia has been voting for a new president in its eleven time zones since Friday and will continue to do so until Sunday evening. The ballot is intended to secure another six years in office for 71-year-old President Vladimir Putin. Putin's three competitors are considered to have no chance and to be close to the Kremlin.

The Kremlin has also scheduled votes in occupied areas of Ukraine. Ukraine protested against the elections, which were held in breach of international law, and called on the international community not to recognize the results.
