The Swiss cement industry delivered less cement in the first quarter of 2024 than in the previous year. With a drop of 8%, cement volumes are thus continuing to decline. The previous year as a whole had already seen a decline of 10%.
Specifically, a good 786,000 tons of cement were delivered from January to March, as reported by the Swiss Cement Industry Association Cemsuisse on Tuesday. However, as in the final quarter of 2023, the decline slowed somewhat, according to the data.
The association cites the continuing difficult planning of building construction projects and the uncertain situation with regard to interest rate trends, energy prices and supply chains as possible reasons for the ongoing decline in volumes. On the other hand, Cemsuisse continues to see the various planned projects in civil engineering as positive.
Meanwhile, the proportion of low-CO2 cement types remained stable at 96.5%. In addition, the proportion of cement transported by rail increased slightly compared to the same quarter of the previous year: 38.2% of Swiss cement was transported by rail (+1.1 percentage points).
