Switzerland has deported three convicted criminals from Ukraine to their home country. The State Secretariat for Migration confirmed a corresponding report by the "NZZ" to the Keystone-SDA news agency on Thursday.
It is correct that three people were returned to Ukraine on Wednesday on a special flight, the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) wrote in response to an inquiry. These were convicted criminals who had been expelled from the country. For reasons of data and privacy protection, no further details on the individuals could be provided.
The repatriation of the three Ukrainian criminals was the first since the start of the Russian war of aggression against the country in February 2022, as the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" writes in its Thursday edition. It is possible that these people could now be drafted into military service.
The SEM says that the reasonableness of the return does not have to be examined in the case of convicted criminals who have been expelled from the country. What must be examined, however, is admissibility, i.e. the question of whether the person is at risk of persecution or serious human rights violations. Removal is only carried out if this is not the case. However, a possible call-up for military service is not an obstacle in this context.
Recently, the deportation of two Afghans with legally binding convictions to their country of origin also caused a stir - it was the first repatriation by Switzerland since the Taliban took power in August 2021. According to the SEM, these were criminals who posed a problem for Switzerland's internal security.
