The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has not responded to Russian President Vladimir Putin's criticism of the planned Ukraine peace conference at Bürgenstock NW. It does not comment on statements made by foreign heads of state, it said at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency on Friday.
In a speech on Thursday, Putin said that Russia would not be invited, while at the same time admitting that nothing could be decided without Moscow. And because no Russian delegation was going, it was said that Russia was rejecting negotiations. It was a real panopticon, a cabinet of curiosities, said Putin.
According to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), invitations to the peace conference in June will be sent to around 120 countries in the coming weeks. Cassis had already said on Wednesday that Russia would not be taking part. However, it is clear that a genuine peace process can ultimately only take place with the participation of both parties, the FDFA wrote on Friday.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was therefore the first person with whom Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis discussed the concrete organization of a conference. Cassis also emphasized that Switzerland wanted to openly discuss all points of view and look at all peace plans.
