Switzerland elected to the UN Human Rights Council for three years

Switzerland will return to the United Nations Human Rights Council as a member from next January until the end of 2027. The UN General Assembly re-elected Switzerland to the Council in New York on Wednesday after five years.
This return was considered certain as it claimed the three seats allocated to its regional group together with Spain and Iceland. Switzerland received 175 votes out of 183 eligible voters.
Switzerland's last term of office among the 47 members of the committee expired five years ago. Since then, it has been able to participate in the discussions but not vote on draft resolutions.
Switzerland has not sought membership in recent years so as not to cause any confusion with its candidacy for the UN Security Council in New York. Now its two-year mandate on the most powerful body in the UN system, which it currently controls for one month, expires at the end of December.
Switzerland is a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the fourth time.
