Switzerland is supporting war-ravaged Ukraine with a further CHF 58.7 million to digitize the public administration. The money will flow into projects in areas directly affected by the war over the next four years, as announced by the Federal Council on Friday.
The money from Switzerland will be used for healthcare projects, but also for education and humanitarian demining. The Federal Council is taking the amount from the regular International Cooperation (IC) budget.
With the grant, Switzerland is promoting democratic reforms in Ukraine through digitalization and at the same time increasing the transparency of state services, the government explained the decision. Both areas are of central importance for the reconstruction of the country, which has been under attack from Russia since February 2022.
Ukraine has recently pushed ahead with digitalization thanks to the support of Switzerland and other international partners. More than 20 million Ukrainians now use the Diia app, for example to pay taxes or renew their driving license.
Switzerland will reportedly announce its support in the areas of digitalization and e-governance at the next reconstruction conference for Ukraine. This will take place in Berlin on June 11 and 12, 2024.
The aim is to mobilize further international support for the reconstruction of Ukraine. The previous conferences were held in Lugano in 2022 and London in 2023.
