The Swiss government has announced that it will not be introducing strict border controls with Italy. This follows Germany's announcement that it would be introducing border controls with Switzerland due to the high number of refugees, migrants and asylum seekers. The Swiss government understands the need for such measures following a tragic accident in Bavaria where a suspected smuggler vehicle crashed while fleeing from the police, resulting in the death of seven people. Instead, the Swiss government has increased the personnel of the border guard corps in Italy and will be carrying out increased spot checks. It is important to note that the border regions between Switzerland and Italy are economically intertwined.
