Switzerland is supporting the fight against poverty in rural areas worldwide with a total of CHF 49.5 million over the next three years. The focus is on strengthening small farmers and sustainable agriculture as well as the fight against hunger.
The Federal Council approved the contribution to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (Ifad) on Wednesday, as announced. According to the communiqué, CHF 47 million will be used to replenish the fund every three years. CHF 2.5 million will go to the fund's new "climate window".
Switzerland was the first country to support the creation of this instrument. It is intended to enable the fund to increasingly promote biodiversity and climate protection projects for smallholder farmers.
The International Fund for Agricultural Development is a UN organization. It was created in 1978 and has since been active in more than ninety countries, with more than fifty percent of its activities taking place in rural Africa.
According to the website of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the fund is an international financial institution that grants favorable loans and credits to countries where rural poverty is widespread.
