Switzerland supported the resolution adopted by the UN Security Council on Friday to increase humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. This would help to alleviate the "catastrophic humanitarian situation" in the Gaza Strip and has taken up various aspects of Switzerland's position on the conflict.
These included, for example, compliance with international humanitarian law by all parties to the conflict, the release of all hostages, the guarantee of safe and unhindered humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip and the need for a two-state solution, as the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced on Friday evening.
The resolution addresses the urgent humanitarian needs of the civilian population and deplores all attacks on civilians, including acts of terrorism "which include those carried out by Hamas since October 7," the FDFA added.
In its statement after the vote, Switzerland emphasized that the resolution must be complementary to international humanitarian law, according to which all parties to the conflict and other states are obliged to allow and facilitate aid measures for the suffering population.
The resolution does not affect Israel's right to ensure its defense and security, writes the FDFA, but should rather facilitate humanitarian access and enable the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
