Several children and teenagers have vandalized a school building in Stein AG in Fricktal and set fire to it. According to the local council, the property damage caused by the act of vandalism four weeks ago amounts to more than CHF 100,000. The cantonal police investigated the alleged perpetrators.
Furniture was destroyed and the large wall mirror in the music room and numerous items of crockery were smashed, the Stein municipal council announced on Tuesday. Fires were set in several places in the building. Due to the smoke, harmful substances were spread throughout the building.
The local council wrote of "destructive rage" that was "unbelievable". The municipality of Stein is located on the Swiss-German border on the Rhine.
The act of vandalism and arson were committed on the weekend of June 15 and 16. The perpetrators had broken into part of the school building, which is currently being renovated and converted.
A case for liability insurance
According to the municipality, the cantonal police quickly identified the perpetrators. The Office of the Juvenile Prosecutor opened criminal proceedings.
Three insurance companies are currently dealing with the claims settlement. The insurance companies would certainly indemnify the perpetrators or their parents, the municipal council noted.
