The blue Swiss driving license on paper is only valid until the end of October. From November, all drivers must be in possession of a credit card format ID card.
Anyone who still presents the old blue license at a police checkpoint must expect a fine of 20 francs. This was announced by the Association of Road Traffic Offices (asa). This is because the old ID cards do not meet international safety standards. According to the asa, 330,000 people still had such a blue license at the end of August.
In order to exchange their driving license for a new one, drivers can contact a road traffic office in their canton of residence - either locally or online. The new driving license in credit card format will then be sent by post within a few days.
The new version of the driving license in credit card format has been available since mid-April 2023. Around one million people in Switzerland are already using it. The asa states that the old version of the ID card in credit card format is still valid - it only needs to be exchanged if the details change.
