For the center, the new agreements between Switzerland and the EU are a clear step forward compared to the 2018 framework agreement. The Federal Council has succeeded in making progress in important areas "under the leadership and thanks to the personal commitment of President Viola Amherd".

In a statement on Friday, Die Mitte expressly welcomes the fact that the Federal Council is putting the new agreements up for discussion separately. It will now examine whether the outcome of the negotiations provides for acceptable solutions, particularly with regard to the safeguard clause on immigration, wage protection and institutional issues. The protection of wage levels and social security systems as well as the principles of Swiss migration policy are central to Die Mitte.

With regard to wage protection, the EU grants Switzerland special rules, such as the non-regression clause, because it recognizes that Switzerland is particularly exposed as a high-wage country. The EU is also accommodating Switzerland with regard to the Citizens' Rights Directive. In particular, it accepts our stricter constitutional provisions on the deportation of criminal foreigners.
