The Council of States Reduces Ambitions in the CO2 Law.

The Swiss Ständerat has approved the revised CO2 law, which is intended to help the country reach its goal of net zero emissions by 2050. The law sets out targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by around two thirds in Switzerland, which corresponds to a reduction of 34% by 2030 compared to 1990. The Ständerat decided to remove federal funding of 30 million francs per year for electric car charging stations in multi-party buildings, companies and public car parks, as the majority felt that private funding should be used instead. The Ständerat also decided to follow the EU in setting a target of 45% emissions from new cars by 2030, rather than the 25% proposed by the Kommission für Umwelt, Raumplanung und Energie (Urek-S). The Ständerat also decided to use up to one third of the revenue from the CO2 tax for the building program, rather than the half proposed by the majority and the federal government. Finally, the Ständerat approved a quota for renewable aviation fuels, but rejected a proposal for a levy on business and private jets.
