The Swiss Federal Council has approved an increase in the credit for the car transport services on the Lötschberg, Furka and Vereina tunnels from 60 million to 100 million Swiss Francs. The funding for the rolling stock will now be provided through bank loans. The car transport services have been subsidised by road funds since 1985. The Federal Council believes that these connections are important for the accessibility of the regions and will help to avoid longer detours and pass trips. The Federal Council has also decided to no longer finance the rolling stock for the car trains directly, but to use external financing, as is the case with regional public transport. If there are any uncovered costs, the Federal Council can provide compensation. The car transport service on the Simplon tunnel will continue to be funded by the canton of Valais, while the Oberalp car transport service will be discontinued in 2023 due to low demand. The rail service on the Oberalp will be expanded instead.
