The Swiss Federal Council has voted to oppose a motion from Judith Bellaiche (GLP/ZH) which would prevent the EU from monitoring the chats of Swiss citizens. The motion was passed with 114 votes in favour and 24 against, with 21 abstentions. The motion argued that while the monitoring was for a legitimate purpose, it was still a foreseeable violation of rights. The Federal Council requested the motion be rejected, as it is still unclear what form the new regulations proposed by the EU Commission will take. Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider stated that the EU Commission's proposal does not include any continuous, arbitrary state surveillance of digital communication. The EU Commission proposed new regulations in May 2022 to prevent and combat the sexual abuse of children on the internet. The new law would require providers to detect, report and remove material related to child sexual abuse on their services.
