The Federal Council Will Allocate an Additional 2.6 Billion Swiss Francs for Railway Infrastructure

The Swiss Federal Council has requested 2.6 billion francs from the Railway Infrastructure Fund to build a nine kilometre long railway tunnel between Lausanne and Geneva. The tunnel is planned to be built between Morges VD and Perroy VD, and will create an alternative route in case of disruptions. The Council has also approved a new long-term strategy to expand the railway in the agglomerations. In addition, the Council has approved credit increases for the Brüttener Tunnel and the expansion of Zurich-Stadelhofen station, as well as funds for the expansion of Geneva and Olten SO stations. Part of the 2.6 billion francs will also be used to cover additional costs of already approved projects due to delays. The new long-term strategy, ‘Perspective Railway 2050’, will replace the existing ‘Long-term Perspective Railway’. The focus of the strategy will be on short and medium distance railway expansion, such as additional S-Bahn services and the upgrade of suburban stations. For long-distance routes, the Council will focus on improving the railway’s competitiveness against road and air transport. In the freight sector, access to the railway will be improved with new transshipment and city logistics facilities.nnnnnnnnnn
