The repair work in the Gotthard Base Tunnel is expected to take several months. Initial estimates of the damage have been exceeded, with 16 derailed and partially severely damaged freight cars still in the tunnel. Investigations have revealed that 8 kilometres of track and 20,000 concrete sleepers need to be replaced. This work is expected to take several months, with the SBB expecting both tunnel tubes to be fully operational again by early 2024. In the meantime, freight traffic is expected to resume on August 23rd, with passenger traffic continuing to be diverted via the panoramic route.nnnnnnnnnn
