Switzerland officially has a new nature park. Above Lausanne VD, the Parc naturel du Jorat (PNJ) was officially inaugurated on Saturday in the presence of Federal Councillor Albert Rösti. It received its label in May 2021.
The PNJ is the second largest urban park in Switzerland after the Sihlwald in Zurich and offers the public around 40 km of hiking trails. The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) has designated the park as a "Park of National Importance" for a period of ten years.
The Jorat Nature Park is "an excellent example of how the protection of the territory and the promotion of renewable energies can go hand in hand," said Rösti, alluding to the EolJorat wind farm. This project envisages the construction of wind turbines in the Jorat forests to supply the Lausanne region with renewable energy.
The Jorat Park is located in the middle of the largest contiguous forest area on the Swiss Plateau in the municipality of Lausanne. According to the city of Lausanne and the canton of Vaud, it plays a key role in the preservation of biodiversity and the study of ecosystems.
In addition to the two nature discovery parks Jorat and Sihlwald, there are 16 regional nature parks in Switzerland and the Swiss National Park in the canton of Graubünden. The parks of national importance are characterized by beautiful landscapes, rich biodiversity and valuable cultural assets.
