The "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" comments online on Beat Jans' election to the Federal Council as a "bourgeois demonstration of power with consequences":
"In the end, the SP's ticket proved its worth. But the Social Democrats have received a slap in the face. A conspicuous number of members of the Federal Assembly did not appreciate the restriction to two candidates from the left wing of the party. Almost a third of the electorate did not want to be told who to vote for and who not to vote for. At the same time, the 70 votes for [Daniel] Jositsch raise the question of how useful tickets are at all. Although they strengthen the influence of the parties, they restrict the freedom of choice of the Federal Assembly. So the days of tickets are probably over. This time it was nothing more than a demonstration of power. One that forced the left to concentrate its votes on the better accepted of the two candidates. The next election to the Federal Council will probably be more uncontrollable - but also freer and more exciting."
