In 2022, fewer people in Swiss cities received social assistance than in the previous year. According to the Städteinitiative Sozialpolitik des Schweizerischen Städteverbands, the average number of supported persons decreased by 2.4 percent. The highest social assistance rate was 9.9 percent in Biel, followed by Lausanne with 6.8 percent. The lowest rate was 1.5 percent in Zug, 5.3 percent in Basel, 4.9 percent in Bern and 4.1 percent in Zurich. The positive development was attributed to the favourable labour market situation and a decrease in new cases. The Städteinitiative Sozialpolitik des Schweizerischen Städteverbands and the Fachhochschule Bern analysed data from Basel, Bern, Biel, Chur, Lausanne, Luzern, St. Gallen, Schaffhausen, Schlieren, Uster, Wädenswil, Winterthur, Zug and Zurich.
