In the canton of Thurgau, the FDP has returned to the National Council, with Kristiane Vietze from Frauenfeld winning the seat that was lost to the Greens four years ago. In the first round of the Council of States elections, the two incumbents, Brigitte Häberli (Mitte) and Jakob Stark (SVP), were confirmed. The SVP increased its voter share in the canton to 40.7%, four percentage points higher than in the 2019 elections. Despite the lack of a joint list, the party was able to defend three of the six Thurgau National Council seats. The incumbents Diana Gutjahr and Manuel Strupler were re-elected, and Pascal Schmid (SVP) from Weinfeld was elected to replace the retiring Verena Herzog (SVP). The Greens lost their seat, as Kurt Egger failed to be re-elected. The joint list of the SP, Greens and Green Liberals only managed to win one seat instead of the two they had hoped for. The Greens lost two percentage points, coming in at 8.6%, while the Social Democrats lost 2.2 percentage points, coming in at 10.4%. Christian Lohr (Mitte) was re-elected, and his party increased its voter share from 12.7% to 15.5%, with the joint list with the FDP (10.9%) and EVP (2.5%) winning a second seat. The movements Aufrecht and Mass-Voll, which emerged from sceptics of the Corona measures, achieved 1.9% and 1.1% of the vote respectively. The turnout was 46.6%, slightly higher than in the 2019 elections when 42.4% of the electorate participated. In the Council of States elections, the challengers from GLP, FDP, Aufrecht and an independent candidate were unsuccessful, and the two incumbents, Brigitte Häberli (Mitte) and Jakob Stark (SVP), easily exceeded the absolute majority in the first round. The Thurgau Council of States has been firmly in the hands of the Mitte and SVP parties since 1999.
