Zurich-based author Gianna Molinari has been awarded the ZKB Schiller Prize 2024 for her second novel "Hinter der Hecke die Welt". The prize is endowed with 20,000 Swiss francs and is awarded on the recommendation of the Swiss Schiller Foundation.
Gianna Molinar's novel "Hinter der Hecke die Welt" (2023) is "a book that is as topical as it is poetic, tackling climate issues with literary means", the Swiss Schiller Foundation wrote in a press release on Tuesday.
The novel is about a small village. The inhabitants are trying to avert its extinction. Two central characters are the children Pina and Lobo, who have stopped growing. The second storyline revolves around a research ship in the Arctic. There, Pina's mother Dora observes how the icebergs are melting. Molinari has interwoven both strands. The author draws on what she has imagined, researched and observed.
Molinari studied Literary Writing at the Swiss Literature Institute in Biel and then Modern German Literature at the University of Lausanne. Her debut novel "Hier ist noch alles möglich" was published in 2018 and was nominated for the Swiss and German Book Prize. Molinari also co-founded the art action group "Literatur für das, was passiert" and the authors' collective "Rauf". She lives in Zurich.
The ZKB Schiller Prize is awarded annually to authors who live in Zurich. Previous winners include the artist couple Julia Weber and Heinz Helle and the authors Annette Hug and Dorothee Elmiger. This year's prize will be awarded on June 24.
