The traditional Zibelemärit began in Bern early Monday morning. Tens of thousands of people are expected and tens of thousands of tons of onions are usually on offer at Bern's largest market.
By 4.30 a.m., the stalls were already decorated with the goods and the first visitors were on their way through the town, as reported by a Keystone-SDA reporter. Onion braids, onion wreaths and onion figurines are on sale at the Zibelemärit. Cheese and onion tarts are eaten. The smell of onions hung in the air.
The market traders, who often come from the canton of Bern or the neighboring canton of Fribourg, also sell garlic and seasonal vegetables. The confetti and the confetti battle in the afternoon are also part of the festival.
