The 24th International Meeting of Friends of the Citroën 2CV began on Tuesday in Courroux near Delsberg JU. Organisers expect between 4000 and 6000 of the legendary "duck" cars to attend the six-day event, which is the largest ever to be held in the Jura region. A 53-hectare area, equivalent to around 75 football fields, has been set aside for the cult cars and their fans. Since early Tuesday morning, long queues of 2CVs have been forming at the camping check-in, with visitors arriving from many countries including Australia and Martinique in the French Antilles. The frugally-equipped 2CV was a cult vehicle of the hippie movement and a much-desired car for many poorer people in France. Over the years, it has become a well-maintained collector's item and a symbol of a certain lifestyle. This is the third time the 2CV meeting has been held in Switzerland, with Avenches VD hosting in 1977 and the Haslital in the Bernese Oberland in 1991. Citroën produced the "duck" between 1949 and 1990, with 3.9 million four-door limousines and 1.2 million "Fourgonette" delivery vans sold. The "duck" has an air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke boxer engine and front-wheel drive, and its low purchase price and simple technology make it an affordable car to maintain.
