The river tour operator Thurgau Travel is currently no longer accepting new bookings for trips to Bangladesh. The reason for this is the confusing political situation, which led to the resignation and flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the day before.

Although there are currently no trips with Swiss guests on board the RV Thurgau Ganga Vilas, "we are monitoring the current situation closely. Passengers who have already made a booking with us for a Bangladesh river cruise in spring 2025 will receive detailed information within the next few days," Thurgau Travel announced in a press release on Tuesday.

"We see it as our responsibility to ensure the well-being of our employees on board and that of our guests at all times," the statement continued. Thurgau Travel offers river cruises on the Ganges and Brahmaputra with the new ship RV Thurgau Ganga Vilas, which was built in 2022.

Storming the government palace

After weeks of demonstrations, which reached their peak on Monday with the storming of the palace of the head of government Hasina and her flight abroad, the situation on the streets of the capital Dhaka was predominantly calm on Tuesday morning. A curfew imposed by Hasina has been lifted again. Consultations for an interim government were underway.

At the same time, however, there were reports of further violence on Monday, particularly during the night. More than a hundred people were killed across the country, local media reported, citing local authorities and others.

The victims are said to be mainly followers of Hasina, who resigned on Monday and fled the country. According to reports, protesters also stormed and looted houses belonging to members of Hasina's Awami League party.
