The Ticino branch of the German company Mubea, which specializes in the automotive industry, is facing closure. At the Bedano site north of Lugano, 78 people could lose their jobs.
If the scenario of the plant closure proves to be true, the possible redundancies will be announced from October, as the company announced on Wednesday. Either way, production is set to cease in spring 2025.
A consultation was launched on Tuesday and will run until September 17, as Piergiorgio Giuliani, member of the Board of Directors, told the Keystone-SDA news agency on request. A decision is to be made by the end of September.
Connections to Ruag
According to its managers, the Bedano-based plant, which supplies Europe with automotive products, has fallen victim to inflation, rising energy costs and the growth of the electric car market. It has not been possible to pass on all the increases in production costs of the last three years to customers, they said.
The German Mubea Group, which specializes in the automotive and aviation industries, employs 17,000 people worldwide. In July 2023, Mubea also acquired the Aerostructures division in Germany and Hungary from Ruag International.
