The Canton of Ticino remains in the red: the government's budget for 2024 predicts a deficit of 95.7 million Swiss francs and a savings package of 134 million francs. The government attributes the deficit to the stagnant economy and the negative results of the Swiss National Bank. To balance the budget by the end of 2025, the Ticino government has proposed a large savings package that affects all areas. This includes a reduction of 27 million francs in personnel costs, cuts to contributions to health facilities such as Spitex, EOC and facilities for the disabled, and reductions in subsidies for public transport, the University of Applied Sciences and the University of Ticino. The Ticino government has also introduced an expenditure brake, which requires a balanced budget by the end of 2025 without burdening the municipalities or raising taxes. The Ticino Grand Council will have to decide on more than a third of the savings measures.
