Less ice cream was eaten in Switzerland last year than in the same period the previous year. Compared to 2022, the Swiss bought 2.6% less industrially produced ice cream.
The members of the industry association Glacesuisse sold a total of 45.7 million liters of ice cream, as the ice cream producers' association announced on Monday. The downward trend only stopped in the last quarter of 2023.
This was at a time when temperatures were falling, Glacesuisse noted. "This proves once again that (excessively) hot temperatures are not always conducive to ice cream consumption," the communiqué stated.
At 28.6 million liters (-1.9%), home consumption again contributed the most to sales in Switzerland in 2023. In street sales, sales of ice cream cups and popsicles were even 5.9% lower.
Members of the association include Gasparini, the Migros subsidiary Delica and Emmi, as well as the Nestlé joint venture Froneri with brands such as Frisco and Mövenpick and the local subsidiary of the Unilever group, whose portfolio includes brands such as Magnum, Cornetto and Ben & Jerry's.
