According to tourism boss Martin Nydegger, the end of the year will be an absolute record year. Business in the mountains has been booming since corona.

"For the first time in the history of Swiss tourism, we can count over 40 million hotel guests this year," said the Director of Switzerland Tourism in an interview with "Schweiz am Wochenende" on Saturday.

The record year is the result of good cooperation between all players in the tourism industry. "We can be proud, because just two years ago the virus had us firmly in its grip and no one would have thought it possible that 2023 would set a record.

It certainly has to do with how the coronavirus phase was overcome together. Resilience is one of the industry's strengths. They have also persevered in marketing: "We have never closed offices, never run the campaigns to zero," continued Nydegger.

Swiss guests are still very important. "However, we are probably now reaching a ceiling in terms of overnight stays." In the wake of corona, the Swiss have rediscovered their country, and now wanderlust will also increase again.

The long-distance markets will probably now reach a natural limit: It would hardly be much more than 20 percent. But without the long-distance markets, the hotels could not be fully booked. These guests are very important because they book well in advance, come in any weather and in any season.

Switzerland's image has suffered absolutely nothing: from a tourism perspective, it remains excellent. The world's population does not form its opinion of Switzerland based on individual reports such as the one about CS. People do differentiate. Switzerland is still perceived as a safe and reliable travel destination.
