Transport caused economic costs of 102 billion Swiss francs in Switzerland in 2021. As it was still under the dampening influence of the Covid pandemic, the costs were five percent lower overall than in the last "pre-Covid year" 2019, according to the federal statisticians.

The total costs of 102.4 billion francs correspond to around 12,000 francs per head of the population, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Monday. Three quarters of the costs were attributable to passenger transportation and one quarter to freight transportation.

According to the FSO, roads accounted for the highest share of costs at 81 percent. However, it also handled the most traffic. The cost shares of rail transport (13%), air transport (6%) and shipping (0.5%) were significantly lower.

According to the FSO, transportation alone accounted for more than half of transport costs. Traffic-related environmental and health damage was responsible for a fifth of the total costs, the expansion and maintenance of the transport infrastructure for 15 percent and traffic accidents for ten percent.

In 2021, some transport companies posted high losses due to the pandemic-related slump in passenger numbers, the FSO writes. They amounted to CHF 1.1 billion in air transport and CHF 0.6 billion in rail transport.

According to the FSO, users paid 31% of all costs for public road transport in 2021, 35% for rail transport and 41% for air transport. In private road transport, user financing amounted to 74%.
