Six months before its cinema release, the sequel to the thriller "Joker" is already generating huge interest. The trailer for "Joker: Folie A Deux" with pop star Lady Gaga in a leading role was viewed a sensational 167 million times within the first 24 hours of its release, as the industry magazine "Variety" reported on Thursday (local time).
The trailer immediately landed at the top of the trending videos on the video platform YouTube. The huge interest in the trailer on the online networks is fueling the hopes of production company Warner Bros. that the new "Joker" film could even surpass the success of its mega-hit "Barbie". The online response to the current "Joker" trailer is higher than that of the first "Barbie" trailer, reported "Variety", citing industry circles.
"Barbie" was the most successful film of the past year with worldwide revenues of 1.4 billion dollars (1.2 million Swiss francs). The first "Joker" film generated revenues of just over one billion dollars in 2019.
The trailer for "Joker: Folie A Deux" was shown at the CinemaCon industry convention in Las Vegas on Tuesday and subsequently posted online. However, more details about the content of the film are still unknown, and the trailer does not provide too much information. Rumors are circulating that it is a kind of musical.
Director Todd Phillips said in Las Vegas that it was a "movie in which music is an essential element". Nevertheless, the sequel "doesn't stray too far from the first film". The title character Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker, once again played by Joaquin Phoenix, is still "strange and aloof and distant and all that, but he has music in him", which was already evident in the dance scenes in the first film.
