Trains on the Gotthard are being rerouted longer than expected.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel will remain closed for longer than expected following the derailment on Thursday. According to the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), passenger and freight trains will be diverted until at least August 16th. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when a freight train travelling from Italy to Germany derailed at the Faido TI multifunctional station. The 57 kilometer tunnel between Bodio TI and Erstfeld UR has been closed since then. It appears that the derailment was caused by a broken wheel. The Swiss Safety Investigation Authority (Sust) has found fragments of a wheel and signs of derailment a few kilometers before the accident site.nnnnnnnn
