The Japankäfer eradication campaign in Kloten, Switzerland has been completed. Most of the affected people cooperated, but two people were reported for refusing to spray their gardens with insecticide. Sampling revealed dozens of beetles, indicating that a population had formed. The effective number is likely to be much higher. Since last week, there have been various reports of Japankäfer outside of Kloten, but all of them have proven to be false. The insecticide application was completed on Friday afternoon and traps will remain in place for several weeks to capture any remaining beetles. Japankäfer are highly destructive pests that feed on more than 300 different plants, including berries, fruit trees, vines, corn, roses, and trees such as maple, birch, and linden. A strong infestation can cause significant damage. So far, the pest has only been found in populations in the Swiss canton of Ticino.
